A Video Performance Work
SOMETIMES…NOT ALWAYS is my second large electronic music project based on my observation that something magical happens when three or more people make music together. My goal was to be three people in stereo. The basic purpose of the video is to provide a synchronized visual reference to the art of electronic music performance. After recording two tracks at a time and videotaping the performance from a different perspective every fourth night, each movement was edited to its present length. With the help of computer editing, the videos were made to conform to the audio, and then processed digitally. In concert I play a fourth part which is variable and still evolving. The primary function of this additional part, played on piano and/or synthesizers, is to provide a live element which can help to bring out important thematic material. This recording, which is intended to make its statement by itself, will, I hope, provide a benign experience which is both stimulating and relaxing. The title seems an appropriate answer to any questions about my relationship to electronic music in general. Thanks to everyone who helped. – Ralph Grierson
