Stravinsky/Cage/Reich

Angel Artistry

In 1967, Grierson and Michael Tilson Thomas, who met studying at USC with John Crown, at the request of Lawrence Morton, premiered a “piano four hands” arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” – originally created as the piano rehearsal music for the ballet while Stravinsky was orchestrating. The duo would record the piece for Angel Records in 1969, but this time on two pianos, at the request of Stravinsky himself, who said (in his thick Russian accent) “It would be better for the stereo!”

Grierson and MTT would collaborate again on another recording for Angel, performing John Cage’s “Three Dances for Two Amplified Prepared Pianos” and Steve Reich’s “Four Organs”, where they were joined by Reich, Roger Kellaway on 4 Farfisa organs, with Tom Raney providing the constant maracas for 24 straight minutes.
