For Ralph Grierson
Commissioned Work for Keyboards
In 1979, Grierson had an idea to commission 3 of his dear composer friends to write original pieces for different keyboards to be released by Town Hall Records. The first, Requiescat, by longtime collaborator William Kraft, was written for Fender Rhodes with ring modulator and phase shifter.
The second piece, Nataraja, was composed by Frederick Lesemann for prepared piano (preparations included nuts and bolts, rubber tubing, and coins in the strings).
The third, Liquid Strata, for piano and electronics, was composed by Morton Subotnick and was the first of a series of “Ghost Pieces” – where piano sounds are manipulated and distorted by tape and a Buchla box (an early synthesizer).
